This essay analyzes the differences in voter choices between the Taipei and Kaohsiung electorates in the 2006 mayoral elections. Special attention is paid to administrative performance and corruption scandals surrounding Chen Shui-bian and Ma Ying-jeou. The results indicate that the evaluation of candidates has more influence over voter decisions in Taipei than in Kaohsiung. Also, regardless of voters party identification, the Kaohsiung electorate is more satisfied with the DPPs administrative performance than the Taipei electorate is with the KMTs administrative performance. Moreover, the electorate’s evaluation of administrative performance is a significant factor in voting decisions in Kaohsiung, but it has no significant influence in Taipei. Still, while Chen Shui-bians integrity does not have a significant impact on voter choices, Ma Ying-jeous integrity does serve as a significant factor in voting decisions.
